TRICARE Regional Contractors
for the United States
TRICARE transitioned from 12 regions and 7 contractors stateside to 3 regions and 3 contractors to better meet the health care needs of TRICARE beneficiaries. The new contracts were phased in from June through November 2004. Each of the three TRICARE regions in the United States has a regional contractor that helps coordinate medical services available through the military treatment facilities and through a network of civilian hospitals and providers. The regional contractors are responsible for a variety of functions, including:
· establishing TRICARE provider networks· operating TRICARE service centers· providing customer service to beneficiaries· providing administrative support, such as enrollment, disenrollment, and claims processing · communicating and distributing educational information to beneficiaries and providersThe regional contractors work with the TRICARE regional offices (TROs) to manage TRICARE at a regional level. Both the regional contractors and the TROs receive overall guidance from TRICARE Management Activity (TMA).
Regional contractors are no longer responsible for providing retail pharmacy services and claims processing for TRICARE for Life under the new TRICARE contracts . TRICARE West region provides health care services and support in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, except for the Rock Island Arsenal area, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, except for the St Louis area, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, the extreme western portion of Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
